Natural gas is a gaseous combustible substance which mainly consists of hydrocarbon, normally methane. It is an important raw material to make ammonia, ethylene etc. It has high heat and can burn completely, so it is an environment friendly clean fuel. By the end of 2008, Sinopec Corp. has proved gas reserve 6,959.3 bcf and yearly output 293.07 bcf.

Most gas fields of Sinopec are located in the northeast region of Sichuan. With the development of Puguang Gas Field and the completion of Sichuan-to-East China Gas Transmission Pipeline Project, the Company and the local economy alongside the pipeline will be benefited from it with the availability of clean gas as fuel and chemical raw material.
 
The pipeline starts from Dazhou City in Sichuan Province in the west, runs across 6 provinces and 2 municipalities, before ending on Shanghai. Its trunk line has a total length of 1702 km, and constitutes a primary component part of China's backbone natural gas pipeline network. Puguang Gas Field, being a major gas field under this project, has its economic reserves known as 278.295 billion cubic meters, and is the largest-scale integral gas field in the southern marine facies domain of the day, while boasting a rosy future of resources development. The gas from this project will mainly supply Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai as well as Hubei, Anhui and Jiangxi provinces.
