SINOPEC Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology (SRIPT), a subsidiary of the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC CORP.), was established in 1960 as one of the institutes pioneering R&D for refinery and petrochemicals industry.
SRIPT has long devoted itself to the R&D and commercialization of the processes, catalysts for aromatics, propylene, alternative energy-oriented chemicals, functional polymer materials, fine chemicals and oilfield chemicals.
Established at SRIPT are the National Engineering Research Center for Basic Organic Raw Materials, Postdoctoral Scientific and Research Working Station of the Ministry of Personnel of China, the Petrochemical Branch of the National Standardization Committee in China, SINOPEC Information Center for Petrochemicals, SINOPEC Standardization Center for Petrochemicals, Shanghai Petrochemicals Quality Inspection Center and the Catalyst Division of Shanghai Testing Center.
Over 48 years of its history, SRIPT has developed many commercially proven and world-level technologies and catalysts for petrochemicals, such as xylenes from toluene disproportionation, styrene from ethylbenzene dehydrogenation, acrylonitrile, PTA, cumene, hydrogenated pyrolysis gasoline, vinyl acetate etc.. Based on these self-developed technologies, SRIPT has also developed more than 60 process packages for different scale petrochemical plants, such as 280 KMTA acrylonitrile, 1800 KMTA toluene disproportionation to xylenes, 500 KMTA styrene, 160 KMTA ethyl benzene (gas phase process), 300 KMTA cumene, 75 KMTA MTBE, 6 KMTA ethanol dehydration to ethylene, 2 KMTA dimethyl ether and 30 KMTA methyl amine. Most of them have been licensed to large or middle scaled petrochemical units or plants at home and abroad. Toluene disproportionation unit of 1000 KMTA, styrene plant of 200 KMTA and acrylonitrile plant of 130 KMTA in China were successfully commissioned with SRIPT’s technical service and skillful support.
"Going Global" or "Going out" has become one of SRIPT's strategies in finding its partnership in the academic and industrial communities at home and abroad. In 2007, SRIPT won the bid for Polymir acrylonitrile capacity expansion, which is the first case for SRIPT to license its acrylonitrile separation technology to an overseas client. After successfully licensing a process for 870 KMTA toluene disproportionation unit, SRIPT recently exported the toluene disproportionation catalyst to the client. In exploring the possibilities of using social innovation potentials, SRIPT has joined the 973 National Program on Key Basic Research Projects (the 973 Program) for the "basic studies on the synthesis of porous catalytic materials with novel structure and excellent performance", the "basic studies on the catalysis and the reaction engineering for low carbon olefins", and established a collaboration laboratory with Nanjing University.
Through the on-going efforts and investment made by SINOPEC, SRIPT's R&D capability and strength have been continuously enhanced in terms of its facilities, equipments, and well-educated and well-trained personnel. Currently, SRIPT has built up or improved its R&D platforms for catalytic materials and their application for petrochemicals, fundamental research and characterization, chemical engineering development, simulating calculation and modeling, polymer and synthetic fiber materials, and oilfield chemicals. Several model laboratories with good innovating potentials have been set up in the institute. The 74000M2 Pudong Innovation base (current research facility) is re-oriented as a well-found facility for preparation, scale-up, characterization and pilot of molecular and other catalysts. For further enhancing SRIPT's strength, 340 million RMB is invested in the 166667M2 Caojing base for the engineering development of petrochemical technology, which is now under construction.
Since its establishment, SRIPT won more than 220 awards of the science and technology progress from provincial, municipal and state administrations, including one state first-class award for science and technology progress, one state second-class awards for invention, Elite science and technology award, one Ho Leung Ho Lee award, one Nie Rongzhen award for innovation, one Elite award for science and technology. In 2007, SRIPT won 10 awards of the science and technology progress from provincial, municipal and state administrations, including 2 SINOPEC Corp. first-class awards of science and technology progress, one Shanghai Municipal first-class award of science and technology progress and 1 China gold award for patent. Up to 2007, SRIPT has filed 1089 China patent applications and has 115 foreign patents granted. SRIPT has also maintained its title of “Shanghai Civilization Unit” for five years.
In its new era, SRIPT has further perfected its developing plan and goal: build SRIPT into a strongly competitive, world-first-class research institute in five or ten years, specialize in aromatics, alternative energy-oriented chemicals, organic raw materials, synthetic fibers, functional macromolecular materials, fine chemicals and oilfield chemicals and support the development of China's petrochemical industry. The last three years of the eleventh five-year plan is an important period, during which SRIPT will emphasize its original R&D and capability cultivation, support the development of China's petrochemical industry as a "propeller".
