Founded in the June of 1958, SINOPEC Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry (BRICI) has been one of the pioneers in China dedicated to comprehensive researches in the petrochemical industry. Its history can even be traced to the August of 1922 when the famous patriot industrialist Mr. Fan Xudong and the famous scientist Dr. Hou Debang founded the Huanghai Research Institute of Chemical Industry in Tanggu, Tianjin.
BRICI is located inside the Third Ring with beautiful scene, convenient transportation access and comfortable living environment. BRICI has well equipped pilot plant site located in Tongzhou district providing a broad space for its future development.
Oriented to Sinopec's main businesses, BRICI takes the core value concept of "innovation and practice" and "contributed to customers", and adheres to the guideline of "self innovation, key area breakthrough, sustainable development, and leading the future" in its technology development activities to implement the innovation strategies for product differentiation and low cost and sustainable development. Putting strengths to innovation of originality, integration, and recreation based on import and assimilation, and priorities to customers and materials, BRICI has been able to achieve key technology breakthroughs, deliver the synergy of our capabilities in product, catalyst and process researches, and successfully provide comprehensive solutions to customers. BRICI has built 8 technology innovation platforms in the areas of industrial catalysis, organic synthesis, polymerization, plastics processing, environment protection in chemical industry, chemical engineering, analysis and characterization, and information technology application. BRICI is home to a few national centers, such as Polyolefin National Engineering Research Center, the National Quality Inspection Center for Basic Organic Raw Materials and the National Test Center for Chemical Construction Materials. BRICI also publishes a few influential academic magazines such as Petrochemical Technology, Petrochemical Newsletter and Environment Protection in Chemical Industry.
BRICI has been able to implement the people-oriented scientific concept of development, and strike a path to foster an innovation team of high quality talents and inspire their creativity in researches and technology development. The team of experts also includes member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Scientist of the National "973" Project. They turned the miracles in science into the productivity in industry. Many young talents with strong innovation ability have stood out, and many innovated technologies have been applied both overseas and in China.
From 1998 to 2007, BRICI has won 61 provincial or ministry level science and technology awards, and filed 515patents in China and 146 overseas. "The R&D and Industrial Application of New High Efficiency PP Catalyst", "the Preparation and Application of Ultra Fine Powdered Rubber Materials", and "the Intensified Heat Exchange Technology for Tubular Cracking Heater" were awarded with the Second National Prize for Technology Invention; "the Package Technology for 70,000 MTA Loop Reactor Propylene Polymerization" was awarded with the First National Prize for Science and Technology Progress; "the Industrial Application of C2 Selective Hydrogenation Catalyst", "the High Efficiency Catalyst for Gas Phase Ethylene Polymerization", "the Fundamental Research and Industrial Application of High Speed BOPP Production Technology", "The Development and Construction of 100,000 MTA Large Scale Ethylene Cracking Furnace" and "the 25,000 MTA C5 Separation Industrial Test Project" won the Second National Prizes for Science and Technology Progress respectively.
The large scale ethylene cracking furnace technology has been applied to tens of ethylene units, with total capacity of 2.6 million MTA. The PP package technology with catalyst technology and resin grade technology from BRICI has been applied to more than ten PP units, with total capacity of more than 2 million MTA. The C2 and C3 selective hydrogenation technologies have been successfully applied to more than ten ethylene units both home and abroad. BRICI's high efficiency PE and PP catalysts are also widely used both home and abroad. The high speed BOPP grade with BRICI technology has become an upgrade in the market. High-performance Specialty PP grade with BRICI technology for high-end automobile application has also been exported. Moreover, BRICI's environmental technologies help implement the clean production in SINOPEC by reducing water consumption and waste discharges.
