BASF-YPC Company Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between BASF and Sinopec with a total investment amounting to USD 2.9 billion, is to build and operate a world-scale, high technology and integrated petrochemical site.  Located in the Luhe District of  Nanjing City,  Jiangsu Provice, it is the first gigantic petrochemical joint venture being approved and put into construction.  For the moment it also is the largest Sino-German joint venture company in China.

BASF-YPC Company Limited is the first strategic joint venture project launched by Sinopec with multinational after its successful international IPO in October 2000.  BASF-YPC Company Limited is a vital part of BASF’s global strategy----it sets a solid cornerstone for BASF to realize 20% of BASF worldwide sales and earnings in Asia by 2010.

With naphtha as the main raw material, BASF-YPC Company Limited is constructing   9 world-scale process plants with 600,000tonne/year ethylene plant as the centerpiece.

BASF-YPC Company Limited adopts the state-of-the-art “clean process” and the integration of the upstream and downstream plants will realize cost efficiency and minimize environmental impact.  BASF and Sinopec are committed to build BASF-YPC Company Limited into a shinning example of Sino-foreign joint ventures and to start the full commercial operation in 2005.  Then the company will supply 1.7 million tons high quality products per year to cater for the increasing demand of the national economy with the main products of LDPE, synthesis fibre material, AA, AE and C1 chemical products, etc.

Since its establishment in December 2000, BASF-YPC Company Limited has made significant achievements on IPS construction as per the milestones specified by the general project schedule.  At the end of  2003, the detail engineering was nearly completed, the equipment and material purchasing orders issued, the main equipments delivered and erected, the installation of cracker and power plant equipment completed and commissioning of utilities started.  All other preparation work like recruitment, financing and pre-marketing is carried out well toward the target of commercial operation at the beginning of 2005.  A world-scale, high-technology integrated petrochemical site is taking shape now.
